Midland Metropolitan University Hospital

The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital opened on 6 October and is set to transform the area and health of local people.

It is more than a hospital, it’s the coming together of expertise from every corner of our organisation and a show of our commitment to regenerate the area, provide better healthcare, create more jobs and so much more.

Level 5 Winter Garden

Facilities and care at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital

Midland Metropolitan has been designed to to take extensive advantage of  natural light, with 50 per cent of patients being cared for in single rooms with ensuite bathrooms, and we have also invested in state-of-the-art technology and equipment to help diagnose patients quicker and more effectively.

The design and layout of our clinical spaces means we can provide patients with the best treatment plan and care for their needs while also effectively preventing and managing infection risks.

Facilities include

  • A purpose-built A&E (Emergency Department) with imaging and diagnostic services
  • A dedicated children’s A&E (Emergency Department) and assessment unit
  • Separate adult and children’s wards with 50 per cent of beds being within single ensuite rooms
  • Operating theatres for both emergency, major planned surgery and maternity
  • A midwife-led birthing unit next to a delivery suite, two maternity wards and antenatal services
  • A neonatal unit
  • Same day emergency care for adults
  • Sickle cell and thalassaemia centre

The improved patient experience  includes:

  • An enhanced environment that offers increased opportunities for patients to stay mobile and independent.
  • A Winter Garden and outdoor spaces designed to help patients stay active
  • The hospital was designed with clinical input to make it an easier process to move around to have tests and receive treatment. Two-way talk systems which are an evolution from the old buzzer devices so patients can directly connect with a nurse when needing assistance
  • Separate corridors and lifts for patients so they can move around the hospital with ease, privacy and dignity.

A better patient experience

We have taken learning from other hospitals and used it to create a space that flows better, is better suited to people’s various needs and is designed to aid patient recovery and wellbeing.

Ultra-modern and bright, the hospital will feature floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. This is to allow plenty of natural daylight to create a calming and friendly environment that will positively impact patient and staff physical and mental wellbeing. While those more able can enjoy the fresh air in our ample green spaces and winter garden.

The hospital will have increased single-room occupancy to provide patients with greater privacy and dignity.

We are increasing the number of specially designed spaces for neuro-diverse patients and will have dedicated spiritual rooms welcoming of all faiths.

Our retail offering will also include a Greggs, Marks & Spencer aswell as an Amazon Market Express. The Winter Garden on level 5 will host our restaurant and compliment our numerous coffee shops available across the hospital site.

Midland Metropolitan University Hospital and our community

The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is designed for the diverse and vibrant communities of Sandwell and West Birmingham.

The hospital has been built to focus on those who are seriously unwell or in need of emergency treatment, while Sandwell Health Campus and City Health Campus as well as our community services will provide a range of outpatient, day case and diagnostic treatments. By providing everyone with better and quicker access to care, we will transform the health and wellbeing of our region and deliver more positive outcomes.

The hospital will also help to regenerate the immediate local area with our fundraising campaign supporting community gardens, outdoor spaces and an arts programme for residents. As part of the overall development, we are building a Learning Campus which is due to open in 2025, where we are working with future and higher education providers to provide hundreds of training, apprenticeships and jobs on site.
