Medical Infusion Suite

The Medical Infusion Suite (MIS) delivers treatment for multiple specialties including rheumatology, gastroenterology, dermatology, Behçet’s disease, haematology, ophthalmology and endocrinology, as well as general medicine inpatients and outpatients.

All treatments are administered by a nursing team with specialist skills in infusion administration.

The Medical Infusion Service will deliver treatments Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm on the MIS unit at Sandwell Health Campus.

Treatments are also delivered on the weekends and bank holidays, 8am-6pm at the Medical Procedures Unit on level 3 of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

OPAT team

The outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) team manages the delivery of intravenous antibiotics to patients who are medically stable, within their own home or by attending an OPAT Clinic at Sandwell Health Campus.

With the help of the OPAT team, patients are discharged earlier and in some cases hospital admission can be avoided altogether. Receiving intravenous (IV) antibiotics at home improves quality of life for patients and reduces the risk of hospital acquired infection.

District nurse teams support the OPAT service for evening and weekend community administration.

OPAT operates as a 7-day service and administers IV antibiotics within a patient’s home for those who cannot walk or cannot attend the OPAT clinic at Sandwell Treatment Centre or during weekends at the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

The most common conditions that may be treated include:

  • Infections
  • Rheumatoid arthiritis
  • Lupus
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Vasculitis
  • Osteoporosis

The medical infusion service sees patients that have been referred by their consultant for treatment.
