No Smoking Day campaign marked with video

14th Mar 2019

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust marked National No Smoking Day by producing a short video around going smokefree.

The film includes stories from our staff and patients and their experiences around smoking as we prepare to go smokefree on 5 July this year – our 71st birthday.

If you are a smoker and would like to stop, you can follow the #NoSmokingDay campaign online and use the hashtag #TellUsYourWay to post on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and make a statement about how you’re going to quit smoking.

Watch the video below:

Smoking impacts:

  • Smoking is the nation’s no.1 killer.
  • One in two long-term smokers dies from a smoking-related illness
  • Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. It causes lung cancer, respiratory disease and heart disease as well as numerous cancers in other organs including lip, mouth, throat, bladder, kidney, stomach, liver and cervix
  • Smoking increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and dementia
  • Second hand smoke is dangerous for anyone exposed to it, especially children who breathe faster and have less well developed lungs, airways and immune systems

Benefits of stopping smoking:

  • You will save money – up to £141 a month and £1,696 a year.
  • Your sense of taste will return and you will enjoy the taste of food more.
  • Your breathing and general fitness will improve.
  • The appearance of your skin and teeth will improve.
  • You’ll be more confident in social situations because you won’t smell of stale smoke any more.
