Volunteers needed to pamper cancer patients

22nd May 2017

We are looking for kind-hearted therapists to pamper cancer patients at an annual health and wellbeing fair.

The cancer team from Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust are holding the special day which aims to help sufferers of the disease and their families relax.

A range of therapies will be on offer, including massages. More than 300 people attended the event last year and organisers hope it will be a huge hit once again when it goes ahead on July 8.

Jenny Donovan, Cancer Service Manager, said: “Being diagnosed with cancer is the start of a challenging journey for the patient, their family and friends.

“That’s why we developed the annual Cancer Wellbeing Fair for all the patients and carers to celebrate the journey they’ve been on or are going through. The event will allow the patients and their carers to take a day off from any worries they have, so that they can totally relax in a safe environment.

“Last year, with the help from our volunteers, the event was such a big success. This year, we hope to receive even more support from our community, from therapists who can see instantly the impact they make on our patients’ wellbeing. “We are looking for experienced therapists who are willing to volunteer their time and expertise to provide pamper sessions to patients and carers.”

One of the most popular activities of the event last year were the pampering sessions, during which patients and carers receive head and hand massages.

Michelle Trowman, owner and holistic therapist at Mind and Motion Therapies, volunteered her services last year and plans to help out again this year.
She said: “It was a wonderful event and an honour to be part of the patients’ journey. What I did was such a small thing, but the people there were so grateful and that made it feel so worthwhile.
“I have already asked my colleagues and friends to come and support and I would urge anyone else who can help, to come along. Any extra support will make a great difference to cancer patients and their carers.”

The event will be held at the West Bromwich Albion Football ground from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
If you are able to offer your services or would like to find out more about the event, please contact Jenny on 0121 507 2776.
