City Health Campus

City A&E (Emergency Department) will remain open until 10th November. From 10th November, use Midland Metropolitan University Hospital A&E (Emergency Department).

City Health Campus will retain three key facilities, covering a range of outpatient, day case and diagnostic services.

To deliver better care, we will be closing some sections of the hospital and only keeping the best of the existing buildings.

What services are available

Birmingham Treatment Centre at City Health Campus will offer outpatient and short stay surgery.

It will also keep its chemotherapy unit and major imaging services will be based there, as well as key diagnostic functions for common services like respiratory illnesses.

The Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) will stay, providing not just specialist care but regional expertise for complex conditions.

The Trust will retain three key facilities on Dudley Road:

1. Birmingham Treatment Centre

The Birmingham Treatment Centre provides state-of-the-art facilities for different services including:

Outpatient services:

  • General facilities for multi-speciality use
  • Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Speech and Language Therapy (SLT)
  • Breast services
  • Gynaecology
  • Paediatrics
  • Orthotics

Diagnostic services:

  • Endoscopy Unit
  • Imaging (Plain Film, Ultrasound, MRI, CT)
  • Medical Illustration
  • Blood testing (Phlebotomy)
  • Cardiac Diagnostics
  • Respiratory Physiology (main department)
  • Chemotherapy

Day Treatment:

  • Day Surgery Unit – five theatres and one minor operations facility

Other:

  • Pharmacy
  • Clinical and corporate admin

2. Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC)

The Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre(opens in a new tab) is the second largest facility of its kind in Europe. On the same site as the current City Hospital, the facility receives referrals from hospitals and GPs across the region. A very comprehensive set of services treat many serious eye complaints including glaucoma, cataracts and diabetes-related conditions.

Upon completion of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, BMEC will continue to offer:

  • Outpatients and Paediatric Outpatient
  • Day Surgery unit (three theatres)
  • Visual Function department
  • Ophthalmology A&E
  • Orthoptics
  • Optometry
  • Ophthalmology diagnostics
  • Medical Illustration
  • Pharmacy
  • Clinical admin/records
  • Behcets Service
  • Wet Lab/Training facility
  • Paediatric Day Surgery (no inpatients)

3. The Sheldon building

The Sheldon Building at City Hospital will increasingly become our intermediate and rehabilitative unit for predominantly Birmingham residents and will continue to have wards for those patients.

Outpatient services

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Therapy Services (Rehab, Occupational Therapy, Neurology, Speech and Language Therapy, Musculoskeletal, Foothealth and Rheumatology)

Other services:

The Hearing Service Centre will remain at City Hospital.
